Lots of people talk about self-care in the office . . . but how many of you actually take a few minutes for yourself during the work day?
This is something I have struggled with for years. I get so focused on the task at hand and before I know it 4 hours have gone by without me having moved a muscle. I made a promise to myself to break this bad habit.
Move Around the Space
I realized one habit I needed to form is to get out of my office chair and move around. I started using a 60-90 minute timer or alarm on my phone to alert me it's time to move. Sometimes I'm not at a good stopping point so I allow myself one snooze to prepare myself to stop working. Walk around the house, check the mail, load or unload laundry - it doesn't matter. The point is to spend 2-5 minutes on an activity that does not involve a computer screen and keyboard.
So far it’s working. (Occasionally I forget to set the alarm on my phone but I am doing a lot better.)
Chrome users can explore cool alarm-type extensions in the Chrome Web Store.
If you've ever gotten a massage you know how beneficial it can be. Scheduling more frequent visits can be much more beneficial than once or twice a year. Massagetherapy.com is a great resource for learning about the health benefits of regular massage.
Scheduling monthly massage appointments is an investment in myself and well-being. I spend large amounts of time at the computer and carpal tunnel syndrome is worrisome for me. An ounce of prevention is certainly worth a pound of cure!
In November, I spent weeks researching various shiatsu massage chair cushions. I finally found one that had strong reviews and was affordable.
6 weeks ago, I purchased the Zyllion Shiatsu Neck & Back Massager Cushion and have been using it almost every day. I love it!
I happen to have a chair and ottoman in my office that this massage cushion sits on very well. The chair itself also reclines and I will recline about 10 degrees for extra pressure. Please note, the manufacturer does not recommend laying the cushion on the floor - the rollers aren’t meant for that kind of pressure.
My favorite features of the massage cushion:
- the rollers are heated
- the “spot” button allows you to massage a specific area (I love this for my lower back and shoulders)
- the neck rollers and back rollers work in conjunction or independently
- the width of the rollers is adjustable
- it’s quiet
I am very pleased with my purchase and based on my research I have to say the price is right! If you have the Chrome Honey Extension installed you will see right away if you have the best deal on Amazon.
The massage cushion was placed in another chair in my office to get me out of my office chair. This way I can maximize the benefit of the massage. I will be too tempted to type if I’m at my desk and that doesn't allow me to relax at all. I also love that I can close my eyes for 15 minutes which is a wonderful way to reduce eye strain.
Comment about the self-care techniques you use on a regular basis. What bad habits are you trying to break? I would love to hear about what’s working for you!
